Will I be Debt Free after Taking Part in a Debt Relief Program?

Many people want to know if they will be debt free after taking part in a debt relief program.  This is a common question and concern.  While it is important to note that individuals who successfully complete such programs will be able to overcome their current debt, it is also important to note that individuals may not be entirely debt free at the end of the program, as the enrolled individuals will often be allowed to continue to take out loans throughout the course of the program.

Getting Debt Help

Take Action Today
Facing debt problems and making a plan to repay and stay out of debt is a big step. Once you've made the decision, here's how to get out of debt.

Debtbusters: Who Can Help?
If you can't make minimum monthly payments, consult a certified credit counselor for assistance. Credit counselors can often work with creditors to eliminate fees, reduce interest charges, and in some cases, reduce the amount you owe.  Honesty is essential when getting debt help. Continuing to use credit or not disclosing all of your debt can sabotage your repayment program.

DIY Debt Help
If you're making payments on time and want to get out of debt, here's how to pay off your debt faster. (Note: this plan does not include mortgage or rent payments.)

" Make a list of all debts, their interest rates, payment amounts, and due dates
" Arrange your list with interest rates from highest to lowest.
" Note payment due dates on your calendar. (Schedule payment dates several days before actual due dates to avoid late fees!)
" Focus on the debt with the highest interest rate. Pay as much as you can afford toward this debt, while making minimum payments on your other debts.
" When the first debt is paid off, take the money that you were using to pay that debt and apply it toward the next debt plus its minimum payment. Continue making minimum payments on your other debts. Repeat this process as you work down the list.

Debt Help is more than Paying Bills
Once you're debt free, you'll want to avoid slipping back in to old habits. Understanding how and why you got into debt can help in avoiding future debt.
